Jane Orton Jewellery

I have a workshop with views looking out onto the beautiful Derbyshire countryside which offers an infinite source of inspiration for my work as do my travels and walks on beaches with my family.

I like nothing better than losing myself for days at the bench using traditional making skills.

My work is said to be contemporary with traditional accents – bold and often lending itself to statement. The necklace, adorning Theresa May at a European Summit and as she gave her emotional resignation speech outside number 10, was made by my own fair hands. I had to smile when I saw her wearing it.

I turned to silversmithing and jewellery as a second career as I was not allowed to go to art college when I left school.  I was told, that if I did art, I would ‘turn out like’ Auntie Norah, wayward for the 1950’s and wore brightly coloured tights. She an art lecturer and did silversmithing. During my school holidays, I would relish polishing silver, bending wire and playing with her tumbled polish stone collection.

Sadly my mother passed away when I was 15 and I spent a good deal of time with Auntie Norah and I truly believe her spirit is in my creativity and ability to see. She taught me to look up at buildings and observe architectural detail, where others may simply walk past. I certainly wear the brightly coloured tights!

As my children flew the nest, I honed my craft attending courses all over the country including at the World renowned Birmingham School of jewellery and I am still learning
