Description

“Maya” -30.11.2020

The central feature of this artwork is a doll called Maya which in Sanskrit means “illusion or magic”. Her pale stoic face was handsculpted by me so you can be assured of it’s originality. She wears a crown of blue roses symbolising uniqueness and mystery. Her body is bendable as it was sculpted with craft wire. She is wrapped, all the way from her neck to ghostly tail, in greyish painted fabric and thread. Her body is also wrapped in vines coloured in natural tones of green and brown.

The background is a painted and textured fabric collage. The colourful centre is intended to contrast against the dark outer edges, featuring bright tones of warm yellow and various purple and blue tones.

Length: 36.5cm (while hanging), Length: 29.2cm (thread not included) Width: 21.8cm,

(Signed and dated on the back.)

Materials included; polymer clay, sturdy cork board, mixed scraps of fabric, acrylic paint, cotton thread, hot-melt adhesive, embroidery thread, aluminium wire, faux flowers, stem wrap

  • I am a multi-faceted artist. I have been making various forms of art all my life. My days are spent putting work, passion and love into the things I do. I'm very experimental with a lot of my art. I like to improvise as I'm going along and let my subconscious mind express itself through different methods and materials. My art is the most important thing to me because it is my therapy. In times of distress and sadness I bury myself in creativity and work. I'm autistic as well as regularly suffering with anxiety and depression. Life is an uphill battle and since childhood I've always found that creating is my only true solace.

My most recent projects have been focused around mixed media textile art. In addition to this I also sculpt clay faces and either alter or hand-make dolls and anthropomorphic sculptures. Some of my accomplishments as an artist are; illustrating 15 children's books for author Chrisi E. Da Pavlova, selling artworks and handcrafted items on Etsy and Ebay for over 8 years, having my art featured in American author Tantra Bensko's book 'Word Swell', earning a First and National Diploma in Art and completing a year studying Illustration, BA Hons at Lincoln University.
