Description
This scarf came about as a commission from someone close to me, the request was simply a scarf with an owl. I loved the free rein that this gave me and as I started researching and sketching I knew that it would have to be an owl swooping silently through the night sky. The moon back lit the owl, so I could keep to muted colours, yet bring in the glow from the light spreading across the blues of the night. As I was designing the scarf I wanted an image that looked great flat, but also one that worked when wearing the scarf. The feathered patterns on the wings, combined with the oak branch, leaves and acorns created the desired effect.
All my work is hand drawn batik, I use tjantings (a metal tool for ‘drawing’ the wax) and hot wax with procion cold water dyes. With batik, you work backwards, a bit like a photographic negative, blocking out the lightest colour first and working through the layers, until you reach the darkest colour. It’s a fascinating process originating in Indonesia.
As my designs take many days to complete. this scarf comes as a limited edition print and is 1 of 100. I was given kind permission to reproduce this scarf, which I have done using digital printing technology. The quality of the printing is excellent and the dyes completely colour fast. The scarf can be washed gently with mild detergent in warm water. The size is generous at 205cm x 50cm, adding a little extra warmth and a splash of colour in the winter.
You will receive your scarf in a gift box.
