Tim Carter - Glass & Sculpture

Tim Carter - Glass & Sculpture

Hello, I am an artist, designer and sculptor based in the idyllic county of Rutland. I design and make sculptural and functional artwork with an emphasis on decoration, geometry and construction. My creative process often begins on the way to my workshop whilst on an early morning dog walk with my Tibetan Terrier Barney taking in the sights and sounds of the beautiful Leicestershire and Rutland countryside.   Fortified by a cup of strong coffee, some homemade bread and marmalade to help get the creative juices flowing, I develop multiple sketches and design ideas drawing together inspiration from music, photographs, memory and interpretation of ideas discussed with the clients. My ideas are explored and developed using a combination of hand drawing, tracing and model making to computer vector drawings, templates and patterns. I experiment and hone until I have created a balance between shape, form, structure and surface design. I studied Mural Design and Public Art at Chelsea School of Art and Design where I acquired knowledge in using a wide range of materials, processes and techniques. During my studies and after graduation I worked with artist Danny Lane gaining invaluable experience and skills on several high-profile projects such as the glass balustrade for the glass gallery at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Following my degree, I travelled through India, South East Asia and on to explore and work in Australia. The people I met and the landscapes, architecture and art I saw left their impression and fuelled me with creative ideas and energy. On my return to the UK I completed a PGCE in Art & Design Education, ran adult education evening classes in decorative glass, worked at Norman Underwood stained glass studio in Leicester and also helped in the family engineering and steel fabrication business where I was able to continue to create and explore ideas for artworks and sculpture and gain experience in shaping, forming and welding steel and metals. I established Tim Carter Glass and Sculpture in 1999. I design and produce a range of unique handmade pieces including interior and exterior glass and slate wall-art panels, house numbers and name plaques, mirrors, table lights, sculptures and garden artworks. Alongside this I undertake many ongoing projects which involve the manufacture and restoration of traditional and contemporary stained and decorative glass panels and windows, often for heritage buildings including Rockingham Castle. I have been commissioned to design and manufacture artworks for private, public and corporate; homes, buildings & gardens including presentation award pieces for Roll-Royce Aerospace PLC. To produce something which challenges me as a maker and ultimately enhances or alters the space around it is an amazing privilege. This challenge and investigation is what provokes me into creating and keeps me continuing to design and make work which I hope will enrich people’s lives. I am happiest in my workshop and if I’m not there working on a commission or packaging and dispatching work to customers or galleries I can usually be found designing or modifying and building something for my home or garden.
