Description

‘Ophelia’ Original Oil Painting on Canvas by Lucinda Denning. This is an oil painting I produced on canvas inspired by the famous Millais painting of Ophelia created between 1851-9. It is depicting Ophelia from Shakespeare’s play Hamlet as she tragically drowned herself.

I used 2 dimensional forms for flowers and leaves to echo medieval tapestries in use during Shakepeare’s time.

  • I paint, I draw, I make mosaics. I love vintage clothes and fabrics from around the world and I love faces, so I like to combine people and textiles in my figurative paintings. They might be wearing clothes and hats from my collection. My work has strong clear colours reminiscent of early Italian paintings. I also admire the work of artists such as Bonnard, Chagall and Matisse. Their bright colours and decorative playfulness chime with my own creative leanings. My work has been exhibited in many countries and exhibitions over the years, including the John Player Portrait exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London and The Spirit of London Exhibition at the Royal Festival Hall. I have work on permanent public display in St George’s Hospital South London. A recent children’s Television series ‘ The Secret Life of Boys featured my work prominently on the walls of the main location and is now about to appear in series 2. Series 1 has been shortlisted for a BAFTA so my paintings might be included in a BAFTA too!
