“Nowhare” sculpture by Rachel Watts

The Nowhare is a mixed media piece highlighting the dark loss of British wildlife. The slipping away of the old sihouettes from our country side until there will be nowhere left for the magic to hide.

The Nowhare’

The disembodied head of Andrasta, the hare, rests on an ancient applewood stump. The use of gloss and light absorbing paint work in contrast, creating a 3 dimensional shadow effect of other worldliness. The life less black shows the ancient natural magic slipping away from this world.

The little ‘snegal’ emerging from the stump changes colour with the ambient temperature and can redirrect the focus of the piece depending on its colour. It represents the random hope and sparkle that must always exist once we are aware of the darkness.

  • I am a wildlife sculptor, I describe my work as inspired by nature with a whimsical twist. After Graduating in 3d design, I worked as a commercial sculptor for well known British figurine companies for many years but recently set out on my own with the excitement and freedom that enables me to have. I work from my studio deep in a wood in the fens, where I sculpt in wax, cast in resin, individually paint and lovingly finish each piece. My work is inspired by the creatures who scurry across my path and the magic I find when I follow them.
